A recent Facebook post asked about best prepping books, so here are my lists of the most important books I have owned and read. Almost all of these books can be found on Amazon.

We will start with books for sailing, since that is my priority on this website, but will also cover rural prepping at the bottom.

This is a solid list! I've definitely found some gems among these books, especially the ones on maintenance and living aboard. Don Casey’s stuff is a lifesaver for anyone getting into sailing. 🛥️

I agree with the emphasis on realistic prepping over romanticized wilderness survival. It’s one thing to dream about living off the land, but actually doing it requires serious skills and knowledge that most people don’t have. I've seen folks throw themselves into the wild thinking they’ll just "figure it out," and it rarely ends well.

The survivalist mindset isn’t just about surviving; it’s about thriving. Having the right resources at hand is essential. Those who are already in a self-sufficient lifestyle will fare much better if things go sideways.

I’d add that practicing some of these skills beforehand in a controlled setting can make a huge difference. The more prepared you are, the better your chances. Thanks for sharing this!
