Mafia is a social deduction game that revolves around identifying Mafia members within a group of players. The game is set in a fictional town where the Mafia tries to eliminate the Innocents, and the Innocents aim to identify and eliminate the Mafia.
Setup for Mafia:
- Gather a group of players, ideally 6 or more. The game can accommodate larger groups as well.
- Designate one player as the game's moderator or narrator. The moderator doesn't participate in the game but facilitates it.
- The game requires a standard deck of cards with one Ace of Spades (the "Mafia" card) and one King of Hearts (the "Cop" card). Remove these two cards from the deck.
- Shuffle the remaining cards and deal one card face down to each player. The cards are used to assign roles without revealing them to others. Roles include "Mafia," "Cop," and "Innocent."
- Inform the players of their assigned roles but remind them not to reveal their roles to others. Roles are kept secret.
Objective for Mafia:
- The goal for the Mafia is to eliminate all the Innocents without being caught by the Cop.
- The goal for the Innocents is to identify and eliminate all the Mafia members, with the help of the Cop.
Round Play for Mafia:
- The game is played in a series of rounds, with each round consisting of several steps.
- Players close their eyes, and the moderator instructs the Mafia members to silently open their eyes and identify each other. They then close their eyes again.
- The moderator asks the Cop to silently open their eyes and choose one player to investigate by pointing to them. The moderator indicates whether the chosen player is Mafia ("thumbs up") or Innocent ("thumbs down"). The Cop closes their eyes.
- During the day phase, all players discuss and debate the identity of the Mafia members and decide on a player to eliminate. They vote by pointing to the player they suspect.
- The player with the most votes is eliminated from the game and reveals their role. The moderator announces whether the player was Mafia or Innocent.
- The game proceeds to the night phase, where players close their eyes, and the Mafia members decide on a player to eliminate silently by pointing.
- The game alternates between day and night phases until one of the following conditions is met:
- If all Mafia members are eliminated, the Innocents win.
- If the number of Mafia members equals or surpasses the number of Innocents, the Mafia wins.
Winning:
- The game's outcome depends on the team that achieves its victory conditions: the Innocents or the Mafia.
Tips:
- Players need to be convincing in their discussions and defenses, whether they are Mafia members trying to deflect suspicion or Innocents trying to identify the Mafia.
- The Cop plays a crucial role in the game by gathering information about other players' roles.
